Summary
Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure & Engineering, Superintendent, Environmental will be responsible for ensuring the operations meet or exceed all applicable environmental laws and regulations and complies with Centerra standards and associated industry best practices. The incumbent will assist in site environmental permitting, lead in compliance and management systems and coordinate public and governmental interface on environmental compliance issues.
Responsibilities
- Be the main point of contact for the Environment Department with site operational department Superintendents and Managers and oversee and supervise the day-to-day activities of the Environment team and consultants.
- Direct oversight for implementing and compliance to all environmental standard operating procedures
- Develop and implement environmental strategies with regards to water management, energy conservation, waste reduction, etc.
- Actively participate in and help lead site safety initiatives
- Proactively monitor, review, and resolve environmental and regulatory issues
- Assist to ensure all environmental permitting for the project is moved forward expeditiously and responsibly
- Ensure all environmental compliance reporting is submitted accurately and on time
- Lead the implementation of all Centerra adopted environment-related performance standards (including Responsible Gold Mining Principles) and provide oversight for key disclosure reporting frameworks (e.g., TCFD and SASB)
- Participate in negotiations with local, provincial, and or federal agencies on environmental issues.
- Participate and oversee the budget for the Environmental Department and provide supervision, coaching and mentorship to Environmental field staff
- Develop and maintain a clear and open line of communication between regional management and site personnel regarding environmental issues and actions
- Provide environmental expertise to regional and site management, enhancing awareness of environmental issues impacting the organization in British Columbia.
- Familiarity with the relevant BC and federal legislation and regulations (e.g., Environmental Management Act, Mines Act, HSRC, Fisheries Act, etc.) would be an asset
- Work with the Corporate Sustainability team for engagement with local First Nations communities and Key holders
- Work with the Director, Environment and Regulatory Affairs, act as senior environmental spokesperson for the site, representing the company to both the mine industry and the public as a partner in the development of mineral resources.
Experience, Skills, and Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in technical discipline, such as Natural Resources Management, Mining, Metallurgical, Geological or Environmental Engineering.
- 10 years minimum progressive experience culminating in leadership level position.
- Excellent organizational skills with a high degree of accuracy.
- Proven ability to work under pressure and multi-task.
- Innovative thinking and strong interpersonal skills.
- Good work ethic, self-starter, and high-performance attitude.
- Strong ability to build relationships and work effectively with others at all levels of the organization.
Working Conditions
- This position is based at the mine site where camp accommodations will be provided. The work rotation is fourteen (14) days on and fourteen (14) days off, working twelve (12) hour shifts. This role will cross shift with another Environmental Superintendent.
- The role is located at the Mount Milligan Mine, which is approximately 155 kilometers northwest of Prince George, British Columbia.
- Bus transportation to and from site is provided free of charge from Prince George, Fort St. James and Mackenzie. Employees accessing the site from outside the region are eligible to receive a tax-free travel allowance commensurate with the distance they are required to travel.
- Candidates must be able to maintain high levels of performance for extended shifts.
- Mount Milligan promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.
