Summary
Reporting to the Senior Coordinator, H&SS, The Coordinator, Health & Safety will proactively manage the operational requirements in the development, implementation and review of strategy, policy, procedures, standards, and practices relating to security and health and safety objectives in a manner which ensures compliance with Company standards, Provincial and Federal regulations. Drives the operation towards ownership of best practices and behaviours for a secure, safe, and healthy work environment. The position will focus on contractor safety management.
This is a fixed term position for approx 3 - 4 months.
Responsibilities
- Develop and facilitate the implementation of health and safety risk assessment and action plans and safe operating procedures in a manner which meets best practice standards and ensures continuous improvement in the reduction of accident and injury within the mine and contractors that work within
- Monitor and report on health and safety performance of contractors on the mine site and provide recommendations for enhancements and improvements
- Drive the development of a culture based on ownership and accountability to increase health and safety awareness
- Work in a collaborative spirit with the leadership team and entire workforce
- Identify, investigate, report, and provide input regarding the causes for safety incidents and identify and impliment prevention strategies
- Manage the internal and external audit requirements and make recommendations for improved performance relating to areas of non- compliance
- Provide ongoing training, resources and development for mine personnel and contractors relating to best practices in health, safety, and security
- Ensure compliance with all safety requirements, drug and alcohol policy, environmental and other work site rules, and regulations
- Ensure knowledge of occupational health and safety regulation and applicable acts and codes is kept current and up to date
- Liaise with key contractors, regulatory bodies, and industry professionals
- Ensure provision of security, inspection, control and monitoring services to effectively secure the Mt Milligan work site Ensure company property is protected against theft and/or damage
- Oversee the monitoring and control access to the work site ensuring only authorized personnel enter the premises
- Provide support to Sr Health and Safety Coordinators and other Coordinators in Emergency Response operations
- Provide support the medical staff when needed by providing reports, required information
Experience, Skills, and Abilities
- Degree, Diploma or Certificate in Health and Safety Management
- A minimum of 5 years experience in a similar role in mining/heavy industry
- Demonstrated problem solving and decision making skills
- Mine rescue experience is preferred
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong leadership and team building skills with the ability to build positive working relationships with a diverse workforce
- A thorough understanding of drug and alcohol testing
- Knowledge and understanding of safety and environment standards pertaining to legislation and the mining industry in British Columbia
- Valid Canadian Driving License.
Working Conditions
- Work involves a camp-based role at the Mount Milligan Mine site which is approximately 155 kilometers northwest of Prince George, British Columbia.
- Set work schedule of 14x14 rotation, Wednesday to Tuesday, 12 hours per day,
- Work consists of a high degree of social interaction with employees in person
- Regular exposure to multiple priorities requiring scheduling changes and uncertainty in the work organization,
- Candidates must be able to maintain high levels of performance for extended shifts.
- Occasional exposure to hazardous environments with the requirement of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Mount Milligan is a safety-sensitive environment and promotes a drug & alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a ZERO – TOLERANCE policy, with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs/paraphernalia on site
- Bus transportation to and from site is provided free of charge from Fort St. James and Mackenzie.
