Position Overview

  • The position reports to and works under the direction and management of the VP Security, Sustainability & Environment (SSE) and will work closely with the leaderships teams at all sites and projects globally. The role will be based in Toronto with some domestic and international travel. This is a developmental opportunity for the right candidate as part of the organization’s succession plans.


    The primary responsibility will be the coordination of all SSE related communications internally and externally. The role will also help coordinate global activities involved in developing policy, standards, guidance, procedures, monitoring reporting processes. This includes ensuring compliance with applicable national regulations issued by and accepted international standards adopted by Centerra.


    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Manage production of the Centerra Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) compliant annual Responsibility report.
    • Establish collaborative relationships with internal stakeholders to assist in improvement of internal and external communications (including web-based) on all aspects of our approach to SSE.
    • Support the development of company communication materials and when required, make presentations on behalf of the Company and represent the Company at special events and conferences.
    • Collate data and prepare monthly and quarterly SSE performance reports for onward review and inclusion into other internal reports and external disclosure and assurance reports (e.g. Carbon Disclosure Project, Conflict Free Gold Standard, EBRD annual assessments, GRI reporting, EITI reporting, etc).
    • Assist sites directly and help collate SSE information for quarterly Board committee presentations and follow-up requests.
    • Develop and maintain an accessible intranet based mining SSE knowledge sharing system.
    • Conduct continuous research on emerging mining related SSE trends and issues that could impact on business continuity or add value.
    • Help identify and deliver on continuous improvement opportunities for SSE processes and tools.
    • When required assist sites to:
      • Directly with the syndication and implementation of corporate SSE standards, procedures and other planned tools and guidance.
      • Drive consistency and discipline into the SSE process across global operations
      • Maintain positive external relationships with local and Indigenous communities, local businesses, national and governments, traditional leaders, and community-based organizations.
      • Support training program designed to increase education and awareness of Centerra’s SSE goals, objectives and commitments.
    • Perform other duties as assigned with integrity, competence and with a sense of urgency.


    Skills and Competencies

    • Demonstrates a strong passion for all aspect of responsible mining.
    • A proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
    • Solid interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of management and operations personnel.
    • An ability to communicate with internal and external constituencies in a professional manner, including articulating the Company’s SSE messages with clarity and enthusiasm.
    • Flexibility and adaptability to deal with diverse cultures across varying time zones.
    • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships, and to adapt quickly to solve problems in a collaborative manner.
    • Organizational and administrative skills in handling and prioritizing assignments and projects.
    • Able to implement strategies and actions within deadlines.



    • Relevant mining experience (minimum 1 year) is required
    • A degree in communications, sustainability, CSR, environmental management, international development, or similar. Other degrees would be considered with relevant mining related experience.
    • Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) certified and/or commitment to obtain
    • Between 2-5 years related experience.
    • Working knowledge of the principles of international SSE “best practice” in mining would be an asset, such as :
      • IFC Performance Standards
      • EBRD Performance Requirements
      • The Equator Principles
      • The International Council on Mining and Metals
      • Voluntary Principles of Security & Human Rights
      • Towards Sustainable Mining
      • World Gold Council
      • Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative
    • International experience would be an asset.
    • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite and appropriate graphics design software.
