POSITION SCOPE

The role of the Safety Supervisor to manage and implement the activities of the Safety team ensuring consistency with the Company’s long-term strategies. Develop, implement, and maintain safety programs and procedures that promote safe and healthy working conditions for the Mine and ensure emergency preparedness programs are in place. Ensure safety policies and procedures remain in compliance with governmental safety regulations. Act as a senior resource on health and safety issues and provide leadership to the Safety team.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

·           Help to develop and promote a culture of accountability and responsibility to ensure a safe working environment.

·           Develop and implement safety programs and procedures.

·           Establish, implement and manage safety policies, programs and procedures for the Mine.

·           Coordinate staff training in areas such as safety laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring and use of safety equipment.

·           Conduct safety checks, inspecting facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards and to ensure safety regulation compliance.

·           Gather information on the effectiveness of the safety programs and produce reports for senior management.

·           Review industrial accidents, near-miss incidents and occupational injuries to determine causes, establish preventive measures, and oversee return-to-work activities.

·           Report to site management on the safety status of the Mine and recommend solutions for improving safety records.

·           Ensure employees and management are kept informed on safety strategies, policies and procedures and that they fully understand the expectations and the consequences of non-compliance.

·           Provide technical advice, coaching, guidance, and mentoring to employees on safety issues.

·           Order and maintain safety inventory including supplies and equipment.

·           Take part in safety teams and committees and attend safety meetings.

·           Provide leadership to the Safety team, taking a lead role in the employment and development of the Safety staff.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

·           University degree or diploma in a safety related discipline.

·           5 years in a supervisory or leadership role.

·           A combination of education and experience may also be considered.

·           Experience with emergency preparedness and response programs.

·           Preference will be given to those with a CRSP designation/certification or working towards.

·           Valid Level 3 First Aid certificate.

·           8 - 12 years of safety leadership experience in a mining/heavy industry environment.

·           Sound understanding of the Mines Act and Regulations; Occupational Health and Safety Act and all applicable codes and regulations related to the mining industry.

·           Excellent verbal, written and listening skills.

·           Strong presentations skills and demonstrated ability to influence change.

·           Ability to remain calm under pressure.

 

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

 

·           This position follows a schedule rotation of 14 days on site and 14 days off site, 12- hour shifts.

·           Able to pass employment medical screening

·           Comfortable working in close quarters with the team & in extreme weather conditions.
