Summary

 

Reporting to the Manager, Social Performance, the First Nations Liaison will play a pivotal role in facilitating communication, collaboration, and understanding between the mine site operations and local Indigenous communities and employees. This role is a bridge between the company and local Indigenous groups, ensuring that their perspectives, concerns, and interests are effectively communicated and addressed within the scope of our operations, acting as a first point of contact.  

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with local Indigenous communities, Elders, leaders, and members. Act as the primary point of contact for community inquiries, feedback, and concerns related to the mine site's activities.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with Indigenous employees. Work with HR and management in fostering positive relationships and ensuring cross-cultural understanding, awareness and training programs are implemented and maintained in the workplace.  Assist with conflict resolution between workers and supervisors as requested, to find mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Advocate for the interests of Indigenous communities and employees while understanding and balancing the needs of the Company.
  • Take a lead role in planning and executing formal and informal community events including organizing third party vendors and managing and tracking costs to the approved budget to promote cross-cultural understanding within the Company, while collaborating with other departments (Environmental, Social, Governance and Human Resources in particular) to ensure elimination of silos and avoid duplication of work.
  • Participate in regular Impact Benefit Agreement (IBA) meetings and other events as they come up
  • Provide educational resources and workshops to staff regarding Indigenous history, culture and rights.  Present Indigenous and cultural sensitivity training at weekly orientations.
  • Work with the Manager, HR to support the development and ongoing implementation of the P.E.T.E.R program, assisting with candidate screening and interviews, determining fitness for work and vocational skills.  Follow their progress on site and ensure the objectives of their training are being met and act as the main point of contact between P.E.T.E.R participants and their supervisors to promote successful outcomes and help resolve any issues.

 

Experience, Skills, and Abilities

 

  • A minimum of 5 years experience in administration and 2 years of indigenous community relations 
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous cultures, traditions and issues, with a focus on the local Nations’ context
  • Previous experience working in Indigenous community engagement, consultation or in a liaison role, preferably in the mining sector
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build trust among diverse stakeholders
  • Conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities, with a view to fairness and equity
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation
  • Valid Canadian Driving License

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Work involves a camp-based role at the Mount Milligan Mine site with a set work schedule on a 4x3 work schedule, 10 hours per day.
  • Work consists of a high degree of social interaction with employees in person.
  • Regular exposure to multiple priorities requiring scheduling changes and uncertainty in the work organization,
  • Occasional exposure to hazardous environments with the requirement of wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Mount Milligan is a safety-sensitive environment and promotes a drug & alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a ZERO – TOLERANCE policy, with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs/paraphernalia on site.
  • Bus transportation to and from site is provided free of charge from Prince George, Fort St. James, Mackenzie and Smithers.
